Student Spotlight: Sophie Kanter
"The mix of both nature and its beauty and the sophisticated architecture of both modern and vintage buildings heavily influenced my etching piece. I wanted to ensure that I could utilize the juxtaposition of both nature and architecture to make an interesting piece. In order to do this, I had to find the subtle areas on 13th street that combined both nature and architecture.
There were many examples of nature and architecture. After multiple photos and multiple laps up and down the street, I finally chose what I wanted to print. I was inspired by the contrast in nature and buildings.
So, when I got back to the studio, I began, with the rest of the class, prepping my board. After prepping and engraving the design on it, I did not end up wanting to change the original design.
After this, we needed to put the plate into acid to engrave the lines. The plate rested in the acid for 25 minutes, then was cleaned with water and different solutions. The wax that was first put on before carving was also removed, so the plate could be properly printed. The printing process was time consuming, but well worth the wait and effort."
