Student Spotlight: Anya Lukavsky
"I became inspired for my etching project by looking at the plants and architecture on a couple blocks of 13th street. I captured many pictures of these things, but when I went back to the studio, one stood out from the rest. It was a picture I had gotten of a tree across the street backed by a brick wall housing more greenery. I decided to adapt this image into a drawing of a girl standing under a tree on a block very much like the one in the picture.
I first sketched out this idea on scrap newsprint paper and then redrew it on a copper plate. The first print I got from that plate was beautiful, but I decided the shadows needed more emphasis, so I covered the plate with more hard ground and drew more shadows. The prints I got that time had more contrast, so I left the plate alone and made five copies."
